South Portland approved a $41.5 million bond referendum to renovate and expand the high school as well as address safety, health, and security issues cited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). Residents voted 6673 to 4297 in favor of the bond.
South Portland residents have pride in their community. Even in this difficult financial time, we chose to look beyond the short-term and make a long term investment in our city. South Portland voters recognize that quality schools build quality communities.
Renew SPHS wants to thank every voter who thought about, cared about, and came out to vote on this issue. Throughout the campaign, members of Renew SPHS have been heartened by the fact that the discussion focused on how to improve the school not whether we should do anything at all. This speaks volumes to the commitment people in our city feel towards education and our schools.
The high school renovation is an investment in one of our most important civic assets. This investment will preserve our property values and encourage business development in our city. Most importantly, it will secure the future for generations of South Portland students to come. The successful vote represents a long-term solution that will solve the current facilities problems with the school, and best position our city for future growth.
We would like to thank of all the dedicated volunteers that helped us provide information to the community about the renovation. We are very proud of the efforts of our team and the manner in which we conducted our campaign. Our volunteers are committed to quality education and schools in South Portland and we are thankful to have their support.
